Gemin-i.org is a UK registered charity that uses innovation and IT to solve problems in the education and international development spheres. We currently run three separate social enterprises all linked to our charitable objectives.
1). Rafi.ki
Rafi.ki is a online community of schools that was started in early 2007 and builds on the many online communities we've built in the past. It currently works in 82 countries, where thousands of pupils collaborate together on educational projects. You can find out more about it by clicking here, or by going to www.rafi.ki.
2). Reflect
Reflect is a tool built by our engineers to help improve teacher training and practice. A Reflect kit comprises of a laptop, several webcams, microphones and some bespoke software we designed. It uses cutting edge streaming technology to enable teachers to record their class from multiple angles, then share it with their tutor or head of department. It's incredibly useful for a number of reasons but the research conducted by Manchester Metropolitan University has indicated that it significantly improves critical self-reflection in their students and in turn, improves their teaching. It also reduces the amount of travel and time that tutors spend visiting school placements. For Manchester Metropolitan University, that's a saving in excess of £40,000 per year. 3). Webtools
Our longest running social enterprise is our Webtools business. With this we help other organisations to use innovation and IT to solve their own problems. Each year we build many websites, learning tools and online communities for very different partners. We've worked on some fascinating projects with people like the DCSF, DfID, the British Council, the BBC and many more. The Sucata Run
Each year we also manage a tour called The Sucata Run, where we drive cars worth less than £250 from London to Lisbon in fancy dress. It's all for charity and is great fun. Last year we raised just under £50,000 to help raise awareness of the genocide in Darfur. To find out more click here.
